Sanctuary Supported Living
Following a dramatic £2.8m makeover, Sanctuary Supported Living’s Shaftesbury Court, a residential care home for adults with learning and physical disabilities, has been rated as outstandingly well-led, in a new report published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The CQC’s inspection is designed to review the key areas of safety, leadership, effectiveness, care and responsiveness. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Shaftesbury Court was only inspected and rated for leadership and safety – receiving a rating of Outstanding for the first and a rating of Good for the second, leading to an overall rating of Good.
The service was reported as having an “exceptionally positive culture that was person-centred, open, inclusive and empowering. It had a well-developed understanding of equality, diversity and human rights and put these into practice” and that “people living at the service were valued for the individuals they were”.
Residents only moved back to the Trowbridge residential home in December 2020, following a £2.8million remodelling programme. The report noted that “the new build had been designed very much with the people who lived there in mind and that they had been involved in the design and plans at an early stage to ensure it worked for them”. During the remodelling programme residents and staff made a temporary move to another site in Devizes. Since their return, things have gone from strength to strength, with residents (many of whom are wheelchair users) able to move around more easily and live more independently. In April, the service was named as a finalist in the ‘Healthy Homes’ category of the 2021 Inside Housing Development Awards, recognising the impact that the reworks had had in benefiting residents’ lives.
During the inspection, staff also shared their positive feedback with the inspectors about the support and care they’d received from the registered manager, Samantha McCrindle, throughout a difficult year, something which was recognised with a company award for excellent leadership and commitment to the service in 2020.

On a personal note, I’m particularly overwhelmed and touched to have received an Outstanding rating in the ‘well-led’ area of the report – which we couldn’t have achieved without the ongoing support of the whole team and management.”
Sara Keetley, Sanctuary Supported Living Operations Director, said: “I am beyond proud that the team at Shaftesbury Court has been recognised for their tireless hard work and dedication to the wellbeing of the residents, in spite of all the challenges they’ve faced throughout the pandemic. The impressive, remodelled building now reflects the impressive team within it and this means that together, all Sanctuary Supported Living and Sanctuary Retirement Living’s CQC-inspected services are now rated as Good or Outstanding.”
