Staff at Clover Court and Hilltop House, two of Sanctuary Supported Living’s supported housing services in Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds, have been named as finalists in prestigious regional industry awards.
Two members of staff at Clover Court in Lowestoft, a supported housing service for people with physical disabilities, have been shortlisted at the East of England region of the Great British Care Awards 2021, after being nominated by their colleagues.
Stephen Arrowsmith, a Care and Support Assistant, has been shortlisted for the Newcomer Award, thanks to his hard work and dedication in caring for residents. He only joined during the first lockdown in early 2020, having previously worked as a chef, but has hit the ground running and hasn’t looked back since.
He regularly uses his catering skills for the benefit of residents, and his support has given them a new-found confidence in the kitchen; inspiring them to eat healthily and forward to mealtimes.
To add to Stephen’s success, Karen Rudd, a Senior Care and Support Assistant, has been named as a finalist in the Housing with Care Award category – thanks to her unwavering, compassionate and person-centred approach to supporting both residents and her colleagues.
The team look to Karen as being ‘the calm in the storm’. When the service was hit hard by Covid-19 last year – at one point, multiple residents, a third of the staff and all management were either ill or isolating – Karen faced the challenges head-on and ensured that residents continued to receive the highest possible quality of care.
At Hilltop House in Bury St Edmunds, which provides accommodation, care and support for people with physical disabilities, the team has been shortlisted in the Putting People First / Personalisation category of the awards.
They were recognised for the way they put residents’ needs and wants first – even during the challenges of Covid-19. This included finding innovative ways to recreate residents’ much-loved pub, supermarket, beauty salon and bowling alley visits within the service during lockdown, helping to maintain a sense of normality and keep people’s spirits up.
This is the second regional Great British Care Awards success for the Hilltop House team, after they were named as winners in the same category in 2019.

Judging for the East of England region will be held on 4 and 5 October, with the awards night being held on 28 October at the East of England Arena in Peterborough.
