The team at Nickleby Road, a supported housing service in Chelmsford, which provides accommodation and support for adults with learning disabilities and autism, is celebrating after being named as winners at the national finals of the Great British Care Awards 2020-21.

The service, which is run by national supported living provider, Sanctuary Supported Living, made it through to the national awards ceremony after winning in the Housing with Care category at the South East regional Great British Care Awards in June.

Nickleby Road was one of three Sanctuary Supported Living services to reach the final stage of the Great British Care Awards, alongside the team at Montague Road Nursing Home in Felixstowe, who were up for The Palliative Care/End of Life Award, and staff at Norton Road in Stockton-on-Tees, who were also in the running for the Housing with Care Award.

This is the second year of Great British Care Awards success in a row for Sanctuary Supported Living, after Tracey Godfrey, a project worker at Norton Road, won in the same category in November 2020.

The judges’ feedback was very positive, describing Nickleby Road staff as “A very informative and inspiring team. A service user attended interview and expressed how her confidence has grown and [she] is now working. The team clearly are doing an amazing job! They are dedicated and enthusiastic, making a fabulous difference to the lives of others.”

"We were very happy to win the regional award, but to win the national award as well is just amazing."

Michelle Gilbey Mills, Local Service Manager

Michelle Gilbey-Mills, Local Service Manager for Nickleby Road, said: “I was overjoyed when they announced that we’d won – I never expected it! We were very happy to win the regional award, but to win the national award as well is just amazing. I’m so pleased for my team, it’s a wonderful recognition of all their hard work and shows what a difference supported housing can make to people’s lives every day.”

Sara Keetley, Operations Director for Sanctuary Supported Living, added: “I’m really proud of the team at Nickleby Road and all they do in supporting people with disabilities to live as independently as possible. The last year or so has been a real challenge, so this is testament to how the team have continued to deliver personalised support, and foster a happy and inspiring environment for all who live and work there.”
