Looking beyond labels this Learning Disability Week

This Learning Disability Week, we’re joining the national conversation led by Mencap around the theme, “Do You See Me?”.

The annual campaign focuses on the lives and experiences of around 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, asking whether people are genuinely recognised and included in everyday life, or whether assumptions continue to shape how they are treated.

Learning Disability Week encourages a closer look at the gap between being seen and being understood and highlights how looking past assumptions is not about ignoring a learning disability, but recognising it as only one part of someone’s life.

People with learning disabilities are part of communities in the same way as anyone else, but that is not always reflected in how they are included. They are employees, volunteers, neighbours, friends and family members, with responsibilities and routines that matter to them. Their ambitions are shaped by everyday life: finding work, building independence, forming relationships, and having the chance to make their own choices about how they live.

Support plays a role in making that possible, but it works best when it’s shaped around the person rather than the other way round. Across Sanctuary Supported Living services, that often means focusing on practical steps. It might involve building confidence to travel independently, finding local groups or activities, or developing everyday skills at a pace that suits the individual. It can also mean recognising when someone wants to try something new and giving them the space to do it.

Rhys, who benefits from supported housing in Malvern, recently shared his experience of autism with BBC News, describing it as his superpower. When we spoke to him, he reflected on what being seen means in his own life.

While everyone’s experience is different, there is one clear, common thread. People are more than their support plans. At Sanctuary Supported Living, we see every day how important that is. The people we support are individuals with talents, ambitions and stories that deserve to be heard.
