A group of women and children are gathered outdoors on a paved area. Some women are holding babies, while others are standing or kneeling with toddlers. The group is smiling and appears to be enjoying a casual gathering. In the background, there are trees, a fence, and some outdoor furniture. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

Young people in Basildon are more confident, more connected and better prepared for living independently after taking part in a life changing development programme led by a double Commonwealth gold medallist.

Residents at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Dove Cott House and Swan House are celebrating completing the 20-week Get on Track programme delivered through the national supported housing provider’s partnership with Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, funded by Sanctuary’s Sustainable Communities programme.

The Get on Track programme is designed to give young people the tools and support to take control of their future at a time when youth homelessness is rising, and more than 123,000 young people across the UK were affected last year, according to Centrepoint.

Through weekly sessions, the young people, who are aged 16-24 and include young parents, set personal goals, reflected on daily challenges and developed practical skills in communication, teamwork and decision making.

A total of nine residents across both services took part, led by former Great Britain international fencer, double Commonwealth Team Gold medallist and Athlete Mentor for Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, Claire Bennett. Combining coaching with weekly sessions and interactive activities, Claire has supported residents to build confidence, improve wellbeing and develop a more positive outlook on their future.

As part of their journey, residents put their learning into practice by leading their own social action projects, organising family and friends’ events at each service.

These events marked the end of the course, with bouncy castles and activities for all ages. They were some of the best attended events the services had seen, giving residents the chance to take pride in their home, spend time with neighbours and loved ones, and celebrate how far they had come.

Claire Bennett said: “I am incredibly proud of the young people at Dove Cott and Swan House. They showed real commitment by turning up to every session and supporting one another from start to finish.

“The most powerful part of the programme was seeing them connect, speak openly about their experiences and build a genuine sense of community. It has been a privilege to work with such a positive and motivated group, and I am excited to see what they go on to achieve next.”

"Residents are more self-assured, more independent and more hopeful about what comes next."

Local Service Manager, Keira Harrison, said: “We often see young people arrive feeling unsure of themselves and their future, so programmes like this can have a real impact. The difference we have seen in such a short space of time has been remarkable. Residents are more self-assured, more independent and more hopeful about what comes next.”
